Thomas Helwys led these people to reaffirm their belief in the validity of their baptism. Smyth had come to the conclusion that it had been disorderly and, therefore, regrettable because God was a God of order, not confusion. To defend and clarify his position, Helwys wrote a confession of faith in 1611 entitled A Declaration of Faith of English People Remaining at Amsterdam in Holland.
